I’ll compile a bit of advice I have, assuming I can reasonably give any advice. One thing that has always driven me crazy about people telling you travel advice or stories is often it’s all whipped up into a frenzy, mainly saying things like, “It was the absolute best! Do what I did or you wont have an incredible time! You have to go see this or you’ll die!” But, I don’t buy that. Not every place one goes to is the absolute best. Some are average or even bad. That’s fine. But knowing that, I’d also like to provide information on what to avoid so you have the chance to avoid some of the mistakes I did and make mistakes of your own.
Worth checking out
- Mercato Centrale: This bustling food market is a foodie paradise! Think Grand Central Market in LA, but Italian. Grab a table, wander the stalls, and enjoy the delicious chaos.
- Parione: we had a fantastic meal – traditional Tuscan fare, but damn, really memorable. I made a reservation, but it didn’t feel necessary.
- Vini e Vecchi Sapori: This cozy osteria is perfect for a memorable evening with friends. We had the bistecca fiorentina and loved it. Share a bistecca fiorentina if you can. Must reserve.
- Trattoria 4 Leoni: Cozy and delicious, this spot serves up incredible pasta dishes and other Florentine favorites.
- Vivoli Gelato: Phil Rosenthal wasn’t wrong! This gelato is legendary – creamy, flavorful, and perfect for a hot afternoon.
Hit or Miss:
- All’antico vinaio: This popular spot is great for a quick and tasty sandwich on the go. Alyse loved hers, mine was bleh. I probably ordered wrong.
- Sophia Loren Restaurant Firenze: Good for a spritz and people-watching, but the food is just average.
- The Uffizi Gallery: This was a good museum storing some truly iconic pieces of art. We went with friends, and they grabbed the little handle held devices that tell you about the art, and I’m glad they did. It was actually pretty cool. Museusm aren’t for everyone, I feel that, but this one was good in our book.
Skip It:
- Boboli Gardens: While the gardens themselves might be underwhelming, especially with a stroller, the views from Piazzale Michelangelo (reachable by bus or taxi) are stunning.
